Bedwetting: Its causes and Solutions?

bedwetting-its-causes-and-solutions

Bedwetting is a part and parcel of growing up. Usually, 20% of 5-year-olds and 10% of 6-year-olds are bedwetters, says the American Academy of Pediatrics. Gradually, most children grow out of it. However, if your child is still bedwetting beyond the usual age limit there’s probably nothing much to worry about. Here are some things to know

About bedwetting along with its causes and solutions.

Not Laziness:

Many parents often tend to think that persisting bedwetting can be a bad habit of the child and it is their fault that they being so lazy to give it up. But it is in no way closer to the reality. Never think that it is the child’s fault. Bedwetting beyond the age of normal age limit is a very common and solvable problem and it is not due to laziness or spite from the part of the child in any form.

Genetics Plays A Role:

One of the causes of prolonged primary bedwetting is genetics. Your children are more likely to stop bedwetting when you grew out of it as a child. So, if you took a bit more time to grow out of it then your child too will naturally grow out of it in due time. There is nothing to worry about and you should carry on with it taking the measures you usually take while putting your child to bed.

Following Pediatricians Advice:

You should know that there are tried and tested ways to train your child to stop bedwetting. But one matter of concern is that you should never try something on your own without consulting with a pediatrician. Always try to consult a pediatrician before trying solutions on your own. Records show a much higher success rate in stopping bedwetting in children whose parents took the advice from pediatricians.

Causes Of Secondary Bedwetting:

Primary enuresis can be caused due to delay in the maturation of the mechanisms controlling the bladder which is likely to go away with due time. On the other hand, secondary enuresis that means bedwetting again after the child had grown out of it once could indicate underlying causes like psychological stress or trauma, diabetes, urinary tract infection, and some others. In such cases, you must consult a pediatrician who will guide to possible solutions.

The most effective solutions for helping your child to stop bedwetting are as follow.

Urinary Bed Alarms:

In a study, published in the Journal of Paediatric Child Health, researchers found that 79% of 505 children who wore bed alarms achieved dryness within about 10 weeks. Urinary bed alarms are systems worn by the child that wakes the child up as soon as they start bedwetting at night. This way, your child will get accustomed to waking up when they need to go to the toilet at night. This is the most used bedwetting solution.

Reward System:

Another very effecting bedwetting solution that you can adopt is the reward system. In this system as the name suggests you have to motivate your child to pass dry nights and inspire them with rewards for every dry night they pass.

Bladder Training:

Yet another bedwetting solution is training your child’s bladder through delayed urination. You have to do it at daytime. Whenever your child feels the urge to urinate you have to tell them to hold it for a bit longer and keep increasing the time gradually to train their bladder.

Medication:

Medication works only when the medicines are taken and there are side effects. So, medicines are the last resort. So, try all the other bedwetting solutions before you opt for medicines and always take them as per the prescriptions of an expert pediatrician.

So, these are the bedwetting causes and solutions for you if you were wondering about how to stop bedwetting of your child. With these, you will get the basic guidelines on how to approach the issue and stop worrying too much.
